The Moosehead Region sits in what is known as the Maine
Highlands, abutting the Maine North Woods. This region is teeming with a
variety of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. There is a little
something for everyone whether you are interested in Maine's Historical
heritage (you will see why Thoreau felt compelled to write about the area)or
just trying to relax and get away from it all. Young and old, athletic
and not, can find plenty of activities to keep themselves entertained.The
only requirement is you must love relaxation and experiencing nature.
Whether it is watching the hummingbirds flit to the feeders from your
rocking chair on the porch, coming in spring for the brook trout fishing and
wood warbler migration, taking a scenic drive to see Moose or the beautiful
fall foliage, challenging your fellow cabin mates to a Yahtzee tournament,
spending a day curled up beside the fire reading, kayaking across the pond,
or even tackling one of the challenging hikes up a mountain in the area,
there is something here for you to do. We are very excited this year to be

White Water

Moosehead Lake Region, Greenville Maine.
Enjoy nature
Photographers and
painters can take advantage of photographic opportunities waiting in our flower
gardens where butterflies and hummingbirds are frequent visitors.
Feeders for
hummingbirds and woodland songbirds during migration supplement our gardens and
the native flora and provide hours of
entertainment for those that enjoy bird watching.
We also have bird
houses and nest boxes scattered around the campground and on the pond that allow guests to watch
birds raise their fledglings throughout the season.
Culinary
delight and etc.
Guests are welcome to
pick their own fresh produce from our organic gardens whenthey are in season. We
also have a small herb garden that guests can harvest herbs and edible flowers;
to add that special touch to your culinary dishes. In July and August we are
often over run with "salad" materials, so bring your favorite dressing and
feel free to help yourself
We have a small flock
of free range chickens and will share fresh eggs upon request depending on availability during the
laying season.
Dana is also a
commercial lobsterman and we may be able to provide fresh lobsters and crabs at
boat price to guests who make advance arrangements.
For the kids
We have a "bunny hutch" where our two bunnies "Blueberry Cakes"
and "Ruby the lop" live. Our chickens are very friendly and children are
welcome to feed them or come get "eggs" out of the coop under our supervision
(sometimes we have hens laying on eggs for baby chicks).
Kids can use their
imagination with old sticks found in the woods to build log cabins, forts or
fairy houses in an unstructured natural setting. When walking through
the woods, be on the lookout for fairy houses! There is a rather elaborate
fairy house behind the "Lunkers Cabin". We also have a large tree
swing in the camp yard and a small selection of childrens books in each
cabin. We find many kids can't be pryed from the dock where they will spend
all day catching fish and giggling in delight as they show off their prize!
We love the sound of happy children enjoying nature and encourage this type
of activity, showing the kids where to "dig" worms or giving them tips on
how to catch "hornpout!"

Rainy days
For rainy days each
cabin is equipped with a deck of cards, cribbage board, and a variety of board
games. Each cabin library includes field guides, books of local interest, some
classics, and a few Thornton Burgess children’s stories for your budding
naturalist.
A cabin journal is
provided for you to record your adventures if desired and to read the
observations of fellow guests. In the main cabin we have an extensive library
where you can borrow additional books, field guides, or reference materials
during your stay.
Stargazing
Spencer Pond is an
ideal to watch the stars with the unpolluted skies, lack of outside light. And
the northern lights are often seen. During the meteor showers in 2010 guest
remarked on what an incredible view that had from their "kayaks" on the
pond.
Hiking and
Geocaching
We include in each
cabin a booklet that includes a variety of self directed nature walks, mountain
climbs, paddles, bike rides and scenic drives. This is just a small piece of the
local knowledge we possess, please don’t hesitate to ask us for additional
suggestions.
Interesting way to see
unique geological features and treasure hunt. (Cache in – trash out). We have
several cache's in the area some can be found only by our guests.
Nature
Exploration
Spencer Pond a great
place to explore nature. Deep in the north woods, free from the pollutants of
the big cities, the animals and flora are diverse. Any trip out of the
cabin door can be
a learning experience. From a small midge to the majestic moose. Ferns and
mushrooms carpet the forest floor. Everything is just waiting to be explored,
examined or photographed for future enjoyment. See our field lists below, one
copy is provided in the cabin journals, but feel free to print your own
before your arrival.
