Christine Howe and Dana Black are Registered Maine Guides and lead eco-tour adventures for guests at Spencer Pond Camps.  Our eco-tours were founded with the goal of sharing Maine's wilderness and wildlife with travelers seeking a high quality, authentic Maine adventure for their vacation into the north woods in the heart of Maine's Highlands.We are proud to offer eco-tour vacation packages featuring the wilderness lodge at Spencer Pond Camps. Our trips will take you off the beaten path, to explore areas that few people are ever fortunate enough to see, vistas and wildlife abound and harken back to memories of Thoreau's trips into the Maine Woods. All of our eco-tour packages can be fully customized to meet your individual needs and interests.

Christine specializes in ornithological tours along with flora and fauna or the North Woods. She grew up with the camps as child and has a deep local knowleges of the geography, terrain, and history of this special area.

Dana specializes in limited selective hunting excursions, moose watching, and other wildlife/landscape photographic customized adventures.

Below are a few  examples of the types of trips we can offer. Please call or indicate your interest on our book reservation tab for eco-tour pricing and availability. Tours should be booked in advance at the time of your reservation, we can not guarantee availability on short notice. But you can always ask!

Maine Woods Water Voyage

Take a trip via canoe or kayak across one of the remote ponds in the 22,000 undeveloped acres of the East Middlesex Canal Grant or along the shores of Moosehead Lake. Your Registered Maine guide will provide you with information about the rich history and natural lore in the area. Take the opportunity to visit active eagle and osprey nests, see loons from a safe distance, or sit camoflaged in a blind to get amazing up close views of a variety of waterfowl that may include pintails, teal, wood ducks, hooded and common mergansers, comorants, loons, geese, goldeneyes, and many other migrants depending on the season. Watch for activity in a Wood Duck nesting box, or enjoy the chorus of swamp sparrows, red winged blackbirds or swallows over your head. Hear the splash of the beaver's tail, or catch a glimpse of a moose feeding knee deep in the water, the varying treasures of the north woods are revealed on each trip.

The habitat in the 22,000 undeveloped acres of the East Middlesex Canal Grant surrounding Spencer Pond Camps supports a healthy population of Moose that have adapted to feeding, mating, and hibernating amongst the diverse topography dotted with ridges and small mountain ponds.Come join us as we take you to the Moose hotspots in the area. On our fall trips, watch as an expert Maine Guide calls in a bull moose for an up-close experience and amazing photographic opportunities. Go with our guide and search for dropped antlers in the spring. The array of wildlife in this area is diverse and includes: Moose, Maine White-tailed Deer, Black Bear, Coyote, Ruffed grouse, Bald and Golden Eagles, Osprey, numerous water birds, Red-tailed hawks, Barred and Great Horned owls, as well as snowshoe hare, pine marten, fisher, and beaver.

We can lead you across the pond and through a maze of logging roads and trails that traverse the area’s diverse forests, meadows,ridges and aquatic environments. Take short walks to bear feeding sites, daybeds, rub trees, and places where bears have hibernated during the winter. See an active beaver lodge(one of over 200 in this township) and learn about the ecology of the area and the impact the animals have on shaping and using the environment in this working forest.Learn about Black Bear Ecology by taking short walks to bear feeding sites, daybeds, rub trees, and places where bears have hibernated during the winter.

Enjoy your evening as the sun drops behind the mountain and dusk settles over the pond  and paddle under the emerging stars with the backdrop of the mountains silhouetted by the rising moon. Explore evening wildlife, listen to nature’s symphony of wind,water, and wildlife as evening grows in the North Maine Woods


 

Songs of the Maine Woods – Birds and Wildlife

Great Blue Heron

The habitat in the 22,000 undeveloped acres of East Middlesex Canal Grant and the townships surrounding Spencer Pond Camps supports a healthy population of woodland birds and waterfowl. Awaken early in the morning and walk with your guide around the pond to listen to the sounds of the creatures of the Maine Wood’s awakening. Northern Loons, Bald Eagles, and Osprey’s may delight you with their serenade and up close viewing opportunities. Look for activity in the Wood Duck nesting boxes around the pond, catch a flock of mergansers alighting on the pond, Listen to the cheery sounds of the Common Yellowthroat, Red Winged Black Bird, Swamp Sparrows, and more. Explore the woodland flowers and fauna as you enjoy the chorus of spring warblers, woodpeckers, grouse, and hawks. See where the owls roost, and learn about different food sources and nesting strategies.

Wildland Photo Tours

The habitat in the 22,000 undeveloped acres of East Middlesex Canal Grant and the townships surrounding Spencer Pond Camps provides a diverse landscape with a multitude of photographic opportunities for landscapes as well as flora and fauna. For these special tours we can customize our approach depending on the particular subjects and themes you may be interested in……we can place you in a blind to capture ducks as they land on the pond, drive you to unique vantage spots for that spectacular sunrise or sunset, or paddle you across the pond to capture the early morning fog lifting over the woods creating a surreal landscape.
